What is 4-H?

4-H is one of the largest youth development organizations in the world. The four H's stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. Founded in the early 1900s, 4-H empowers young people ages 6-21 through hands-on learning in agriculture, STEM, healthy living, and civic engagement.

History of 4-H in Nova Scotia

4-H has been a cornerstone of rural youth development in Nova Scotia for over 100 years. The program began in the early 1900s when agricultural colleges started boys' and girls' clubs to teach modern farming techniques. In Nova Scotia, 4-H clubs have been active since the 1920s, growing from small community groups into a province-wide network of clubs that teach skills ranging from traditional livestock showing to public speaking and community service. The Cumberland County Exhibition has been proud to host 4-H competitions since its earliest days, providing a stage for young members to showcase their hard work and dedication.

4-H at CCEx

4-H members are a vital part of the Cumberland County Exhibition. Throughout CCEx, young participants showcase their skills, knowledge, and dedication across a variety of competitions and demonstrations.

Beef Showmanship

Members present and handle cattle, judged on their skill and knowledge.

Light Horse Shows

Riding and horsemanship competitions across multiple disciplines.

Dairy Shows

Showing and presenting dairy cattle breeds.

Dog Shows

Obedience and handling demonstrations.

Small Animals

Rabbits, poultry, and other small animal presentations.

Tug of War

Team competition between 4-H clubs.

The 4-H Pledge
